First Voice staff visit a community radio station in Oudum Xay, Laos |
First Voice International AsiaPFVI launched the South Asia Development Channel in September 2004. The channel is broadcasting to all of Central and Southern Asia on the west beam of the AsiastarTM satellite. The first programs broadcast over the South Asia Development Channel were developed and produced by Equal Access and its partner organizations in Nepal and Afghanistan around topics including reproductive health and teacher training. FVI's second audio channel in Asia is the Asia-Pacific Development Channel, which was launched in 2005 and extends to audiences as far as remote Pacific islands and atolls. In the wake of the December 2004 tsunami disaster, and in collaboration with Internews, FVI established an emergency broadcasting system for Aceh, Indonesia. FVI is also extending programming to rural communities in Cambodia and Laos on this channel. The multimedia channel is available on all three beams of the AsiaStar™ satellite, reaching remote islands in the Pacific. FVI partners, such as CTA, transmit downloadable content via this channel to Community Information Centers in the Pacific providing a lifeline for isolated island communities that may otherwise be cut off from other forms of modern communication. The multimedia channel is available in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Pacific islands as well as other Asian countries. FVI does not currently have an office in Asia but looks forward to opening one in the future. If you have questions about FVI's work in Asia, please contact us at info@firstvoiceint.org. |
